Tanya Aguiniga: Studio Visit
I first saw the work of Tanya Aguiniga at Felt Club in Los Angeles while shooting for Handmade Nation, so it must of been in 2006-07. Her table stood out from the rest of every one's work, her strong sense of design and unique products were unlike most things at indie craft fairs I had been shooting at.
Skip ahead 4 years and our paths have crossed many times at shows, museums etc and we have become good friends. When out in Los Angeles a few weeks ago Aaron and I had the opportunity to hang out with her for the day. She took us to Clare Graham's studio/gallery and to her friend Baba's weaving shop called "Pets with Fez". Then we had the chance to do a proper studio visit in her two spaces that she works out of.
Tanya's work continues to blow my mind. Her ability to work in a variety of mediums while focusing on textiles is incredible. She even busted out this series of prints that were cotton gauze inked and ran through a press, translating into 3-D looking landscapes. From her accessories to the incredibly labor intensive felted furniture she commissions for designers and galleries- all her work is detail oriented and perfectly executed. I strongly suggest you pick up something she makes while it is still affordable weather it's a wearable item or one of her soft sculptures (and if your ballin' get a piece of her furniture!).

Pets with Fez
This is a bit overdue but A few weeks back while in California after Tanya Aguiniga took us to meet Clare Graham at his mind-blowing space (read about it here) we all walked down the street to a mysterious spot called "Pets with Fez" to meet her friend Baba.
Talk about topping an amazing place with another amazing place. Baba has been weaving since he was 6. This shop is crammed with bric-a-brac, yarn and looms and if you live in LA you can learn to weave there. I was in love immediatly.
